Seal of Solomon Collage

This work is one of the 'Relics from Myths' series of pseudo religious artefacts made by Robin Spalding. These are conceptual artworks which 'prove' the truth of a particular element of occult belief systems. Other works in the series are icons, ritual objects or talismans which have allegedly played a role in the practice of the Western Esoteric Tradition. This ritual object, which is gilded and artificially aged, is framed in a contemporary wood box frame with a brass label of provenence. Accompanying Transcript: "This seal has been salvaged from the collection of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a late 19th Century British occult society, including the well known members A.E. Waite, W.B. Yeats, Magregor Mathers and Aleister Crowley. Seals of this kind were used in goetic rituals to protect the bearer from the spirits evoked.The symbol of the seal was first used by the biblical King Solomon to evoke the spirit Baal who was employed by Solomon to cut the rock used in to build the First Temple of Jerusalem. This representation of the symbol was designed by nineteenth century occultist Éliphas Lévi and appears in his influential book 'A History of Magic'.
