About The Artwork
In my work I combine painting, collage and decollage (cutting or sanding away the built up surface to reveal layers below). I am fascinated by the combination of text and image in art, and in ‘Stretched Dreams’ the free association of the collaged figure with the cut-up text creates an evocative work with an ambiguous narrative. The text is cut from pages of novels. In my variation of the cut up technique I cut the ‘poem’ I create out in one section. This is distinct from the cut up technique of cutting out strips of words and re-arranging them randomly.

Since beginning his career in 2007, works by Simon Kirk have proved a great investment and are increasingly sought after by art collectors, notably in America, Dubai and Continental Europe. He exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2010, 2013 and 2015. In the main body of his practice he free associates images and cut-up text to evoke haiku and the allusions that help us view everyday life with fresh eyes. The work is primarily layers of painting combined with collaged elements. However, he also uses the decollage technique - cutting, tearing or sanding away parts of the built up surface image to reveal layers below.
