About The Artwork

Toledo not only builds these works on the superimposition of different references but also reinforces that character through the procedure used in its realization. Each one of these images is built with thousands of small metal fragments, carved during hundreds of hours of work by Toledo himself and his workshop assistants. Once placed in place, the pieces are painted to acquire each of the colors that the final panel will have. The materiality of these works -constructed in the collaboration and combination of infinite fragments- insists on the meaning of the images erected on the fabric of a visual history of the West. So far, in this interpretation, Che appears as a reference, an explicitly alluded image or an appropriation. However, the myth of the revolutionary can be more than a visual signal and become an analogy for the works of Toledo. In other words, these pieces share qualities with which we attribute to the construction of a myth, understanding as such a model figure surrounded by “extraordinary admiration and esteem”. Specifically, I am referring to two characteristics: multiplicity and the way of negotiating the contradiction. Agustin Diez Fischer / Art historian

Multifaceted Argentine artist. Since a very early age, Marcelo Toledo has been attracted by the universe of metals and along his career in the field of metal art has become a big name in his country. As part of his work he has explored design, goldsmithing, jewelry and ceramics. In a more recent period he transformed the traditional goldsmithing technique into contemporary works of art. Currently, Marcelo Toledo is producing works applying indigenous textile techniques and using metal as a guiding thread to connect the past with the present in large format pieces and installations in public spaces. His conceptual focus centers on topics of great social impact like diversity, gender and sustainability. His works are produced using scrape pieces of bronze, copper and other metals, giving new life to these materials. He has made individual exhibitions in numerous museums and galleries throughout the world. Presently, his aim is remaking the past by means of a conceptual alchemy to materialize it into the future.
