Virginia Woolf, The Internal Censor Collage

I have hand-embroidered a text by Virginia Woolf, called 'The Internal Censor' on this pristine white apron. The text deals with the obstacles to a woman's creativity. I have used the sampler tradition, where a text is surrounded by images that are typically done in cross stitch. However, on closer inspection, the viewer sees that the images are not always pretty, and in this I have been inspired by the work of Grayson Perry. While the front of the apron is neat and tidy, the back is a mess; the embroidery threads hans loose, tangled, to suggest that what is seen of a woman in her traditional role is very different to what she feels inside. One of the apron ties hangs outside of the frame and, on this, I have cross stitched a pen, which symbolises that self-expression is the way out of her role.
