This work is part of a series FEMtastic, inspired by recent events in US politics. As I watch politicians turn the clock backward on women's and minorities rights, I was motivated to do a series of paintings celebrating women and equality. I use vintage comics as my inspiration giving the work a fun retro feel. The work draws attention to the issues but in a humorous way. I hope when the viewer sees these works they are enjoyable to look at, amusing and eye opening regarding issues we face today. A lot of the comic inspired pieces have actual words from real vintage comics, poking fun at the socially conservative 1050's and hinting at how this could become a realty if some US politicians had their way. The collages are layered with photos from books and magazines, some vintage some new, bringing past and present together. After the collage layers are built up nicely then the main image is hand painted over. The sides are usually adorned with a pattern tying the whole piece together. Then each painting is finished with 3 layers of gloss varnish.

Cabell Molina is a contemporary artist transplanted from California to the east. Where Cabell has proved herself exceptional is by making the intangible tangible by taking iconic images and translating their meaning on canvas. Her works embody the layers of raw emotion that form by experiencing pop culture in both the present tense and as nostalgia. Her latest series combines the contemplation of the evocative depths of pop culture with the immediate need for social change. Cabell culled an adventurous, playful and at times controversial method of creation, immortalizing the power of an image. She uses type and graphics combined with thick paint, paper and layers to bring images to life. Her assemblage of bold, colorful mixed media work uses found elements, re-appropriated images, photography, Ephemera, oil pastels, aerosol, fabric, gold leaf, acrylic and oil paint. Formerly an advertising art director, Cabell worked for multinational advertising agencies in cities all over the world. Prior to her stint in “the real world”, Cabell studied graphic design, art direction and fine art at Art Center in Los Angeles. She uses her background in advertising, photo manipulation and design to create large scale powerful, relevant pop art pieces. Cabell’s work has been in shows and private collections around the world. She creates commissioned conceptual portraits for clients as well. Cabell is also the owner/creator of LoveArt Gallery and Studio. A boutique art gallery in the heart of the trendy downtown South Norwalk CT. She is committed to the idea the artist is just as important as the work and is making it a priority not only to exhibit outstanding work, but to foster a supportive artist community. The gallery has an adjoining studio where artists work on projects and collaborate on ideas as well as teach classes and workshops. In addition to cultivating strong relationships with artists, LoveArt is passionate about helping individuals and institutions that are interested in expanding their collections. All of the work in the gallery is carefully curated and LoveArt maintains a strict “unique art only” policy when making selections. Art should be something that brings happiness into your life, makes you think, or inspires you.
