About The Artwork

Picasso and Dora I would describe the two images by Julia as a powerful commentary on the complex relationship between the artists Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar, and the ways in which gender and power dynamics played a role in their tumultuous partnership. The first image entitled ‘Done crying, I’m moving on’ depicts Dora Maar smiling, in stark contrast to Picasso's famous painting "The Weeping Woman" from 1937, which is widely believed to be a portrait of Maar in distress. By presenting Maar in a different emotional state, the artist challenges the traditional narrative of Maar as a victim of Picasso's emotional abuse, suggesting that she was a complex and multifaceted individual whose experiences cannot be reduced to a single moment of suffering. Taken together, these images offer a new interpretation of the Picasso-Maar relationship, emphasising the need to view both individuals as complex human beings with their own agency and experiences. By challenging the traditional narrative of Maar as a passive victim and Picasso as a dominant and abusive figure, the artist encourages us to rethink the power dynamics at play in artistic partnerships, and to consider the ways in which gender and power intersect in our society more broadly. Through their nuanced and thought-provoking commentary on the Picasso-Maar relationship, these images invite us to reconsider our assumptions about gender and power in the art world, and to embrace a more inclusive and equitable approach to artistic representation. Anton Blanc, Curator This is one of a series of 3 images that can be bought individually or as a set. Printed on 315 gsm textured paper ideal for prints of drawings and paintings. No white borders. You will receive the print rolled in a cardboard tube. Please not the actual size in 80cm x 80cm (1cm smaller than 32" x 32") This is because this printer works in metric.

I am an artist who likes to explore different materials. I have created works using lacquer on canvas, acrylic on canvas, laser cut plexiglass and engraved gesso board. At the moment I am fascinated by the possibilities of ai generated art and am creating prints with the images I produce. I was a full-time artist from 2001 to 2008 and had exhibitions in London, Paris and Berlin. After that I went into tech and started 3 startups. Now I am combining the artistic side and the tech side by creating ai generated artworks. I create the art works with generative ai and then they are printed on high quality art paper either gloss or matt and Saatchi Art ships them to you. My works are available individually or as a set of three. I like the idea of a set of three as you can tell a story with three pieces. When I first started exploring ai image creation it was like climbing down a ladder into my subconscious as literally anything was possible. Artists using materials tend to stick to what they have always done and don't change very much, with a few legendary exceptions like Picasso. The algorithm has quirkiness built in which can be an advantage or disadvantage as you often don't get what you want but may get something spectacular instead. I found, after choosing a selection from hundreds of images that I created, that the common thread was the 'WOW' factor. My desire is to create images that you are drawn to look at again and again; that literally wow you. That could be because they have a haunting beauty, are satirical, humorous, intriguing, thought-provoking or dark. I hope you like them too. Julia Macmillan @insaineart
