About The Artwork

One-off, original generative art print, created with a unique run of code, exclusive to Saatchi Art. Title printed bottom left and hand-signed bottom right. 73.5 cm (w) x 50.5 cm (h) print area (approx.) on 84.1 cm (w) x 59.4 cm (h) paper. Professionally printed on museum-quality (ISO 9706 conforming), bright white Hahnemühle 310gsm Photo Rag in archival ink. Supplied flat, unframed. Inkt Vis Inkt 221018 0056 combines Riso-printed imagery, translations of screen-printing techniques and the possibilities of creative code with digital printing. At its heart is the relationship between successive printing technologies and how new print processes can echo old ones. The code-determined palette initially selects a series of colours evenly located round the spectrum, balancing them to human perception. As new content is added, its colour reacts to the section of the image already underneath it. The overall composition is achieved by dividing the space up into layers of frames. Each layer has a different arrangement, also responding to what lies beneath. Inkt Vis Inkt is Dutch for cuttlefish ink (sepia) acknowledging the fundamental role ink has in most print processes. Rich, dark areas of colour are offset by paler or brighter areas giving an almost three-dimensional effect. The hundreds of elements float over the image space, creating rich texture and a sense of depth, with each section giving the eye something different to enjoy. The code for Inkt Vis Inkt was powered by electricity from 100% sustainable sources. All code and visual content is original and created by Alex Russell. Each run of the code creates a unique, one-off artwork. The code can be adjusted to create pieces of any scale. Other substrates are available to commission.

Alex Russell works with computer programming and mixed media, creating generative systems that assemble libraries of mainly hand-made images into one-off artworks. His code combines algorithms that model compositional methods (from art and design) with complex systems theory (from science and maths), creating unique outputs with every run. Alex's work explores concepts of non-repeating pattern, coupling the capabilities of digital printing with generative software development. His networks of algorithms influence each other's relative behaviour, governed by rules that employ systems such as cellular automata to determine the characteristics of the content. The code works in two stages, using the biological concepts of genotypes and phenotypes to firstly create the instructions for the output and then build it. He works in series, each with its own themes, code and image library. Overarching everything is a conceptual approach to pattern, including design patterns (from software design) and pattern language (from architecture). Alex is intrigued by how the rich traditions of arranging content can be expressed as a grammar that allows digital technology to take it somewhere new and original. His practice operates in a unique space where code, hardware and hand-drawing/painting work together, drawing on the past to look to the future. Alex's studio is in Manchester (UK); he is originally from Dorset (UK). Prior to being a full-time artist, Alex was a print/pattern designer and lecturer. His book "The Fundamentals Of Printed Textiles Design" is in its 2nd edition and has been translated into French and Spanish. He worked for an international client list and features widely in books about printed textiles. He was programme leader of MA Fashion and Textiles and BA Textile Design for Fashion at Manchester Metroplitan University (UK).
