Technocrats, with their cunning ways Use social engineering, to manipulate and sway Our thoughts and actions, with subtle skill And control our behavior, against our will They use psychology, and sociology To study and understand, our innermost thoughts and our desires And use that knowledge, to manipulate and control Our actions and decisions, with a hidden goal They prey on our weaknesses, and our fears And use them against us, to bring us to tears They divide and conquer, and sow the seeds Of distrust and animosity, with their fiendish deeds But we must not be fooled, by their clever guise We must see through their tactics, with open eyes And reject their control, and their power And reclaim our freedom, in this digital hour. At Stanford University, I attended sessions called Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders, in which Silicon Valley celebrities would talk about their careers and promote themselves and their businesses. On one occasion, two came entrepreneurs that wanted to present themselves as so successful they were only focused on their "spiritual" life at Burning Man; in this work, I wanted to capture that they were hiding something while giving a sales pitch.

While Mark M. Whelan's art is primarily portraits and figurative pictures. However, his aim is not to represent a beautiful image of a person or an individual in a futuristic context; rather, it’s an ongoing exploration of the process of how art is created concerning its structure, composition, colour, and technique. Like many figurative painters of his generation, it’s impossible for Whelan to avoid the looming shadows of Francisco Goya, Francis Bacon, Hieronymus Bosch and Lucian Freud, all of which have dominated the figurative world, their paintings both evocative, emotional and full of existential angst and anticipation of an uncertain future. However, Whelan is finding his futuristic path into the light, away from these titans of the art world, his work constantly seeking to go beyond the discipline of representational art and the more gestural expressionism that we are familiar with in the figurative paintings of Bacon.
