Description: “The Emergence of Consciousness” This collage is the result of another happy accident. It was a cold winter day in Baltimore, and I was taking a picture of the heavy snowfall through the dining room window. But instead of snow, the camera captured these colorful refraction patterns from droplets of water on the cells of the window screen. Each cell is unique, created by the slight differences in the angle of refraction, and is like a little rainbow. And they stayed that way, disconnected from each other, for years. Recently, I rearranged them in rough order of increasing organization and distinctness of colors. The patterns took on a life of their own. I named the series “The Emergence of Consciousness”. Consciousness is loosely defined as self-awareness. Scientists have tried to define it for many years and still don’t have a good model for it. Nor do they know where it resides in the brain. There has been some interesting work to determine whether or not different animals have consciousness, as defined by recognizing themselves in a mirror. This, of course, is a crude and incomplete assessment, and it begs the question: is it a valid test of consciousness? Finally, there is discussion amongst astrophysicists, cosmologists, and theologians about whether or not the universe itself is conscious. For this image I was influenced by other experimental photographers such as Man Ray. Whether or not this image makes you ponder the nature of consciousness, you can appreciate it for its own sake and put your own meaning to it. That, after all, is art. My hope for you is that this image will fascinate you as much as it does me. I could, and have, looked at it for hours.
