This pencil woman portrait (unknown girl called Ali) is from the year 1952 by Valery Levanidov. Throughout his career the artist put high spirit into portrait-painting. He tended to paint people who were near and dear to him but sometimes used models like for Ali portrait. He was born in Riga, Latvia. The artist received an excellent art education. He studied under Artur W. The foundations of Levanidov’s art included truthful portrayals of nature, clear and innocent compositions and sincere tones. Light effects, outright ornamentality, poetics of plastic and colorific generalizations are illustrative of them. In 1984 a personal exhibition of Valery Levanidov’s works was held in Moscow. This was the first time the general public had an opportunity to see all his art works - both oils and water colours -collected together. The exhibition was a major success. Representatives from more than 16 state museums of the former Soviet Union wanted to acquire his art works for their collections. Now more than 20 state museums in Russia as well as private art collection in the states and Europe have the artist's works in their collections.
