The work is an incidental commentary on the demolition of the old industrial soap factory in downtown LA, and the tall chimney left like a sentinel amongst the rubble that seems like giant rocks strum along river banks by ancient floods. As the drawing developed, it reminded me of the industrial landscapes by Charles Sheeler, and I drew with knowing his work. I like to do very large drawings because they make me draw gesturally and not tight and refined. I also like contradiction created between western art, which requires careful wall display, and is hard to move. Where as Asian art is easy to hang. The scrolls are hang off one or two hooks and can be rolled up to move. The drawing represents several other contradictions. It implies the often big scale and permanence of the Western art, but the unframed paper surface embodies impermanence. The drawing is huge unlike the generally small scale of Asian art. The drawing is roughly rendered, which is a permitted condition in modern Western art and not refined and defined as in Asian art rendered over silk. The broken down industrial landscape isn't a theme in Asian art where typically birds, flowers, and humans are treated as beautiful. This drawing, not considering the Asian influence of its display, is not a depiction of a beautiful place, but an expression of mark and gesture. The subject matter is tangental and the vehicle for the means and method of the drawing's creation. I draw standing up, climbing a ladder, and sitting on the floor, as I play over the surface. I call this the dance of drawing.
