About The Artwork

This painting captures and recreates the moment I walked along the Mýrdalssandur coastline in the South of Iceland. This place had an otherworldly feel, the sand completely black and ashen from historic volcanic eruptions. I created marks using graphite over chalk paint on reclaimed wood. I chose chalk paint to give the matt black of ash, in contrast to the sheen of graphite, making the image glisten and ripple.
