About The Artwork

This is the third in my 'Cordism' series of pieces based on the bastide town of Cordes-sur-Ciel in the Tarn region of S.W. France. I live, work and exhibit in the Barbacane (watchtower) part of which dates back to the fourteenth century. Cordes is beautiful, majestic, impressive, imposing, monumental! The complexity of the layers of settlement lends itself perfectly, I think to an original Cubist-styled approach, inspired originally by Picasso's townscapes of the early 1900s. As far as I'm aware no-one had previously attempted work in this manner of Cordes. The eye finds increasing detail here the longer the town is observed. Shapes are repeated, overlap, disappear. The extension of the primary lines joins the town to both sky (sur-Ciel) and through the valley mist, to earth. I chose to work on paper for this piece to help provide more depth and subtlety. The imposing sombre beauty of the town is captured well, I feel in the combination of line and colour. The original piece was sold to a collector and is now in London.

Born 1955 Tottenham,London. Re-located from Norfolk to Cordes-sur-Ciel, France 2015. Now resident in Coulon, Deux Sevrés, France. Stephen Clary's artistic predilections have remained constant throughout his career - an intense appreciation of natural beauty, vibrancy of colour, a certain tautness of line. As his work has developed, so has an appreciation of the way in which the eye will travel over a subject in order for it to 'make sense'. Fragmentation, transparency, multiple viewpoints, negative space are all enlisted in his work, combining to form a harmonious and resonant ensemble. He would site a diverse range of influences - Klimt & Schiele, Cubism & Futurism, Japanese painters & stained glass makers. After a somewhat turbulent seven years in France, he is finally settled in the beautiful 'Green Venice' of the Marais Poitevin. He is joyfully engaged in exploring the possibilities, 'weaving the strands together', always looking for something beautiful. Contact phone number 0033 (0) 6 13 67 79 77
