I work with lines and numbers. Numerical configurations define my spaces, and lines make the space visible. The Random work began in 1975. I love math, I was resident artist at Argonne National Laboratory until 1982 and using computers, like a main frame, in 1975 was a big deal. Each drawing consists of eight lines and a block of numbers, the matrix. Using coordinate systems I show connections between specific points along the parameter of chosen, outlined forms so that “unseen“ spatial relationships are delineated, eliminating arbitrary gesture and subjective design. Mathematics and technology inform an abstraction, which is in itself real. The outlines of four quadrilateral polygons become visible when drawing imaginary lines between the four endpoints of my drawings. Each of the polygons occupies one quadrant. The numbers reflect the vertical and horizontal values of the outlines, totaling eight. I count from one to eight, each number identifies a number line of the respective horizontal and vertical values for each four- sided polygon, 1111,1112, 1113…1122… not 1121, avoiding mirroring repetitions of lines. Each work is original and not a part of an edition. Lines defined by the first and last columns in the matrix are the only repetition I use and appear brighter.
