About The Artwork
A study of the veins and papery petals of the peony. The flowers used for reference in this drawing were dried and added to my studio-made egg tempera wash that was then applied to the background. The linen hangs loosely against the wall where it is able to respond to the movement of air as the flower once did in the garden.

Birthed out of a fascination of ancient technique, my large scale botanical tapestries are a lesson in history and a record of today. After I take photos of the flower for the composition, I dry the flower, grind it into pigment, and make it into the egg tempera I will use to paint the linen. The subject lives forever in its painting, using a widely forgotten process of the Old Masters. The paint is the flower, allowing the flower to live on in its portrait.
