Downtown New York Drawing

This particular drawing was completed in December 2018 on a mix media paper. Destan used black ink, markets and watercolor paint to allow his drawing more texture and depth. The three main buildings have architectural and historical significance to the artist. Growing up in Downtown New York, Destan is always surrounded by the magnificent architecture of the city. The skyscraper on the left is the recently completed “Jigsaw Puzzle” building at 56 Leonard Street. The building in the middle, with the green roof is the historical Trump Building at 40 Wall Street. The blue structure on the right is the Freedom Tower – this building is one of Destan’s favorites and often appears in his artwork. Destan used black ink, markets and watercolor paint to allow his drawing more depth. The countless windows in the artwork illustrate the crowded nature of New York City. The windows on the Freedom Tower appear smudged as though to show how one can feel lost in the crowd with his individualism disappearing. We also notice the intricate window and roof design on the three middle buildings. Financial District, where Destan is spending his childhood, has many historical buildings with elaborate facades. Compared to the middle “red” buildings, the two side buildings in blue are minimalist in their design. This is a wonderful representation of New York City where the old and the new are intertwined.
