Originally this piece wasn't motivated by any social or political ideas what-so-ever. The overall idea from the start was purely aesthetic. But as the drawing became a reality it became clearer and clearer where my mind was going with this piece. The inspirations and the subconscious motivations that led me down an artistic road I'm proud of. I've become a huge fan of rap duo, Run the Jewels, this year. Finding their machine gun-like-flows and powerful lyrics to be not only a great listen but also something to reflect on and be inspired by. In their newest album, Run the Jewels 4, they have a track called, Ju$t, a song that addresses many of the worlds problems and how many of them are created through corruption and greed. One line that is repeated throughout the song as the chorus is "look at all these slave masters posing on your dollar" an interesting topic I never really gave much thought when connecting it to racism, which was iconography. Not only the iconography of the American dollar itself, but also the iconic men that appear on them too. It's now no secret that most of the founding fathers owned slaves. And now in the society we live in, the majority of us condemn such disgusting acts of violence and discrimination, it's difficult to look at the men of yesteryear and hold them to the iconic standards they have been lifted to for years. I think only in this year of madness have we now realised the error in our ways when raising people to godlike standards. We forget the humanity in a lot of historical figures, and unfortunately humanity can be brutal and cruel, but it can also be brave and good. When it comes to this piece, I wanted to convey that message of how something generally good can be seen as a tool of destruction. Money is something that allows people to do amazing and beautiful things, but it also allows for terrible actions to be funded. It's why the dollars on this piece are being placed to cover and hide the many bullet holes of this man, a symbol of the many shocking police killings of black men and women. The blood being gold was to convey the idea that we are all valued at the same high standard that everyone should be and that life is the most precious commodity anyone can own. But unfortunately there are still many people who would take that from someone just because of the colour of their skin. This artwork is not to offend anyone, but to raise awareness of what's going on in our world and remind people that life is the greatest gift of all and everyone should be able to live that gift without prejudice or violence.
