House with cats (Mansions of Kiev) Drawing

The house with cats was built in the early 20th century by the engineer-architect R. Bessmertniy, commissioned by F. Yagimovsky. The house is decorated with figures not only of cats, but also owls, as well as mascarons and the figure of Satan crowning the building. The painting depicts not only the architectural elements of the house, but also plants such as valerian, favorite plant of cats, but also a symbol of hypocrisy and a means of witchcraft and evil eye; Nettle, symbolizing slander; Branches of cypress symbolize sorrow, the underworld of the ancient Greek god Hades. All these plants are not chosen by chance: there is a legend, the House with cats is, in a way, the entrance to another world, and cats - animals often associated with magic and otherworldly forces - guard the entrance to this portal, not to mention the fact that on the top of the building is the sculpture of the devil, which is depicted at the bottom of the picture. The witch's hands stretch out to it, they are adorned with flowery valerian, like lace cuffs. Vegetative symbols of slander and hypocrisy are also not simply present in the picture: Bessmertniy tried to slander another well known Kiev architect, Dobichevsky, the author of the Baron’s Castle.
