Maqiao Dragon is a new series of abstract drawings by Dutch artist Jan Paul Hulsenbek. Jan Paul Hulsenbek is inspired by literature and shapes and structures in nature. His drawings are created over a long period of time. Put aside for a while, only to be picked up again. The question rises whether these drawings are ever finished. This series is inspired by 'The Dictionary of Maqiao', a novel by the renowned Chinese writer Han Shaogong. In this novel Shaogong writes about a dragon as "... a typical Chinese mixture of all animals, an abstract visualization of all life on earth..." To imagine or visualize such an animal seems to be an impossible quest. Nevertheless that is exactly what Jan Paul Hulsenbek pursues in this new series. 'The Dictionary of Maqiao' portrays Maqiao village life from the perspective of a young student sent there by the ´Down to the Countryside Movement´ during China´s Cultural Revolution. The novel was first published in 1996 and has been selected as one of the top 100 greatest Chinese novels in the 20th century.
