ABOUT THE ARTWORK

An anesthetic is any agent that causes a general loss of sensation. You do not feel things when you’re ‘going under’, it’s just a woozy unconsciousness. For that moment, you’re less human since ‘feeling’ in all the ways we do contributes to our essence as a species. My artworks aim to do the exact opposite of that. Through simple, honest elements like mark-making, colour and lines I make the viewer more human by letting them feel more than they allow through their inhibitions. Lately, I feel like society has become that aforementioned agent, and my pictures give them a break from that. It becomes the ‘art’-idote.

Hi! And thank you for stopping by to read more about me. I am Reece Swanepoel, an expressive artist with a life-long interest in order, chaos and our place in between. Crayons was my favourite toy as a child. Unlike my peers, however, I never stopped drawing. This love of pictures morphed into passion once I started using art as a language. Communicating intricate subjects in an expressive style, rather than realistically, offered the opportunity to go beneath the surface. Of course it's worth mentioning that I've had plenty of practice in realistic drawing and painting too. I'm one of those artists who believes I have to know the rules before I start breaking them. Since the sale of my first painting in 2013, I started dreaming about doing this for the rest of my life. I am grateful to say that my art has been collected worldwide, physically and as NFTs because of that dream. I started my journey in NFTs in September 2021. After three months of first observing what's what - and doing plenty of research - I minted his first NFT and it sold immediately. Since then I have sold more than 500 NFTs, had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the biggest names in art, form a supportive community, collected more than 300 NFT artworks and was featured on the front page of OpenSea, the biggest NFT art marketplace in the world. I work with many materials and media, including digital art, charcoal, chalk, oils, acrylics, spray paint, photography, pastels and pen. I'm always experimenting and curious about how I can push art forward, both as a concept and a means of expressing one's inner world. He currently lives and works in Pretoria. Want to be more than a viewer and actually take part in my journey and be a part of my community? Follow me on my socials! It's always free. And while you're at it, message me. I make a point of it to never be on a high horse and will always respond.
