Old Map of the Tyrany of Olethros Print

This map represents the territory of the Olethros state, at the time of the reign of its tyrant about two centuries ago. Its shows the differents vassal states within the tyrany, and on the side of the map the heraldic symbols of the tyrany and each vassal state. This display was made in the fashion of maps of ancient times that I fancy a lot. The only thing is that Olethros state has never existed in real life until the present day. It is a completely modern creation by myself, in order to give a historical, geographical and cultural context to my sculpture project called Addictionville. Olethros, which means in greek perdition, is just a caricature of today's mass production and addictive consumption society. All names appearing in the map, i.e. the states, rivers, mountains, towns, seas, islands and so on..., mean either perdition, illusion, addiction, or words associated with those semantic fields, in various languages. Olethros' symbols used on the shields are connected with the same themes, as the animals or objects used possess, in symbolic litterature or history, attributes or values rather negatively coloured: envy, pride, violence, danger, coercion, restraint, dependance, agressiveness... Still, all this is not obvious at all for a non specialist, and the art piece possesses a real harmony in design, colours and shapes. This map is one of the founding documents of Olethros' real life in the universe. This state of mind lives in everyone of us, as we're all experiencing this highly addictive consumer society, flattering most of the time the bad sides of humans... It is all around and inside you.
