Art Description

Drawing: Charcoal, Graphite, Ink, Pastel and Black & White on Paper.

When I look at this piece (taken from a photo from the Library of Congress of a sharecropper) it reveals to me a woman who is laboring to provide the basic necessities for her family. She sews here in the image. What it is is unknown. She offers the viewer only hesitation and unease at the thought of her presence being the subject of the photographer’s interest.

Her lips tight, jaws clenched, and a slight smile, let on that she is uninterested in the celebrity that may come from this project. Her work demands her attention, and this is, at best, a mild nuisance that is disturbing her ability to sew clothes for the family, farm in the field, do laundry, or prepare dinner. She takes on the chores that in today’s world we would so readily cast aside; especially in the temptation of eternal matter how small.

This image provides a stark contrast to our world today. Her clothes, ragged as they may be, offer little unveiling to her depth of character, so they have purposefully been flattened and diminished of shading. She is clothed by much kinglier garments than those she wears...or sews here.

The graphic lines of pen and ink contrast with the softness and gradual definition provided by charcoal. Pen and ink also allows for the clothes to take a much less substantial role in the overall composition, while simultaneously reinforcing the importance of the subject which wears them.
