About The Artwork

If there is one model I hope to draw again someday, it is the dancer, Soa. This was from the first of two sessions we had with her. Her petite yet incredibly strong physique coupled with striking facial features and some of the best and varied poses I have seen, made for an extremely productive session. Here, Soa is very low to the surface, the main volume of the torso, head and right leg and arm being very contained in a tight ball, with her left leg and left arm jetting out behind and in front, with maximum tension as she stretches these limbs. The rhythms through the pose are fantastic, with that 'C' shaped formed in the center right of the page from the head, round the back to the right knee, and a 'S' shape that flows right across the center of the page from the foot all through the body to the outstretched left arm. This drawing is from the first session where I started to experiment with gouache. A new medium coupled with a fantastic model made these two hours a delight. This, being a five minute pose, I used one thick brush on white paper, and though it was quick, I made sure to incorporate the shadows using a dry brush effect for the face, and harsh, solid black drop shadows on the background limbs and the right leg underneath the torso - when the silhouette of the model is compact and information cannot be seen with negative spaces, shadows are a great way to separate elements to see the different forms clearly, as demonstrated with the arm bathed in light sitting in front of the leg in shadow, and the head in soft shadow sitting in front of the left arm which is in absolute shadow. Even in a five minute pose I find it extremely important to include some indication of facial features and with her shaved head, Soa made it easy to not get lost in details. The left arm is cut off from the page, inviting the viewer to imagine the large amount of space the pose is taking as she stretches out. It was done at the Wednesday evening Life Drawing sessions held at Illumination Mac Guff, Paris, where I worked as a Character Animator for over three and a half years. The studio is known for such films as Despicable Me, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets and The Lorax. All of my figure drawings are from life - no photos were used at any point in their fabrication. The model is in front of you and you have a definite amount of time to get down as much information as you can or see fit. Because of this, each drawing is truly unique and a complete one of a kind, containing a spontaneity that can never be duplicated through photo inspired drawings/paintings. Please continue to look through my work for more images of Soa, quick and long poses.

English/French Character Animator that has worked on animated feature films, 'Nimona', 'Missing Link', 'The Secret Life of Pets', 'Minions', and many more over the last 16 years. Figure/Life Drawing is my passion and as well as being something I take great pleasure in doing, also has a very beneficial impact on my professional work in terms of anatomy, weight, movement and posing. When drawing the human figure I love using shadow to create volume and depth, I love trying to capture the weight and movement in an anatomically correct and yet loose manner, and above all, I love finding little attentions to detail that capture the essence of the model, especially around the face. I have lived across 3 different European countries and the US, and am now living in London, UK.
