As an artist Sarah has always been interested in the way shoes can be nostalgic and commemorative, as well as aesthetic objects, whether it is a baby's first shoes or a child's first ballet slippers, fashionable wedding shoes or functional rugby boots, or simply a favourite, comfortable and cherished pair. Sarah Helen Dowse was born in Durham, UK, and has lived and worked in the Scottish Borders since 1976 after studying Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall. Having postponed her artistic career to raise three children, she has since gained a BA (Hons) Humanities with Art History through the Open University and is now painting again. Working mainly in pastel on paper, she specialises in shoe 'portraits'.
