About The Artwork
When the Spaniards arrived in what is modern day Mexico, the Nahuatl had never seen anything so bizarre and strange. I was in Xochimilco, Mexico when I came upon parade dancers wearing these caricature masks and cloaks. They had a lively traditional dance, bright colors, and delicate feathers atop their hat. I wanted to use pastels to capture a part of the happiness and beauty of the celebration.
