About The Artwork

This work is a quick study of one of a pair of 'twin' (semidetached) houses typical of my North London neighbourhood. I was struck by the differences between the two houses and decided to capture them each from different points of view - this is one of them, shown here in the small hours of the morning when the porch light shone invitingly against the darkness. This work was made with creamy, highly pigmented oil pastels on repurposed newsprint paper, which I had primed with a layer of ultramarine acrylic paint. You can clearly see this bright background pop through the drawing in places. It is signed front and back and presented unframed. There are other studies of this place, as well as of its twin, on my artworks page, and I later developed them into much larger works on canvas.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Karen’s work focuses primarily on capturing fleeting moments of beauty in everyday life, giving them permanence through the medium of paint: a landscape or building observed when no-one else is around, or the demeanour of a person absorbed in mundane activity. Process, colour and the quality of paint are her main drivers, and she has a fascination for the tension between darkness and light, flatness and texture, realism and abstraction. Starting from cropped images, oil pastel studies and abundant colour research, she favours acrylic paint, using a wide range of brush marks and textures. She occasionally incorporates other media such as collage or charcoal.
