About The Artwork

This drawing is a preparatory study of a North London house, which helped me make colour and composition decisions for a larger painting also shown on this website. I hope you will enjoy its more spontaneous and unhinged energy. The drawing was realised in very creamy, highly pigmented oil pastels, on paper that I initially primed with acrylic paint. It was drawn with quick gestures to capture the feel of the place, exaggerating the wildness of the flora around the house. I love working with oil pastels for their ability to generate vibrant colours and rich textures. It is presented unframed, and has a small border which you may choose to display, or to hide behind the mount of your favourite frame.

Karen’s work focuses primarily on capturing fleeting moments of beauty in everyday life, giving them permanence through the medium of paint: a landscape or building observed when no-one else is around, or the demeanour of a person absorbed in mundane activity. Process, colour and the quality of paint are her main drivers, and she has a fascination for the tension between darkness and light, flatness and texture, realism and abstraction. Starting from cropped images, oil pastel studies and abundant colour research, she favours acrylic paint, using a wide range of brush marks and textures. She occasionally incorporates other media such as collage or charcoal.
