About The Artwork

This piece is one work from Cline's "Torso" series, in which she arranges various images and shapes to suggest the female body. The stamped or painted images Cline incorporates are often symbolic and are connotations of femininity or womanhood. The background of this work focuses on a swath of pink and orange watercolor paints, which seem to radiate a darker magenta and golden hue around the edges. In the periphery, the color palette becomes cooler, with shades of purple and blue. Splattered throughout is a metallic gold acrylic, which was soaked up in some areas to create a rippled texture in the paint. The pink-orange center is bordered by dark green stamps of leaves, which create the contours of a woman's torso. The composition is subtle, but it helps frame the other anatomical elements and create a feminine form. At the topmost portion of the work, a ribbon bow is positioned at the center, wrapping around a portion of the body that looks like the neck. Below the bow, two floral branches are lined up vertically. The floral buds on the branches are white glitter with an orange center. The branches resemble the spinal column, stacked directly in the center of the body and positioned to visually arrange the other components of the body. Near the center of the torso, on either side of the spine, are flowers outlined in blue and yellow glitter. The petals of the flowers arch outwards and create a circular shape, which mimics the round shape of breasts, while the yellow centers suggest areolas. Underneath each flower, there are two sets of conch shells, overlapped and angled to create curved lines that stretch downwards. These shells draw the viewer's eye downwards and reinforce the curvature of the body, specifically the hips. At the center of the bottommost portion of the space, two red leaves outlined in glitter, sit above a shimmering shield. The shield is most noticeable, as its placement and triangular shape suggest female genitalia. The shield could act as a sort of protection for the woman, both preserving her modesty and keeping others out. The leaves above the shield are not as straightforward but could represent the uterus or simply reference femininity. Most of the elements in the torso connect to various aspects of womanhood. The foliage and plant matter at the periphery are common motifs in Cline's work, connoting beauty, purity, and feminine virtue. The elements on the interior of the body also connote femininity, but with images of shells and the shield, there could be a larger conversation about fragility and the urgency to protect one's self.
