About The Artwork

This piece is one work from Cline's "Torso" series, in which she arranges various images and shapes to suggest the female body. The stamped or painted images Cline incorporates are often symbolic and are connotations of femininity or womanhood. The silhouette of a yellow and pink torso is formed in the background, using a blue pigment to contour the body's shape. The borders of the work are adorned with stamped flowers and leaves, outlined in different shades of green glitter. Mixed in with the green foliage are faint eleven-point stars. In the center of the yellow torso, magenta rectangular shapes are stacked vertically to create a sort of vertebrae. At the bottom of the spine is the stamped image of a shield in silver and orange glitter. Within the lower section of the shield is a coiled line, which twists and turns in a way that looks like intestines. Directly behind the shield is a pair of cherries, which dangle directly below the bottom point of the shield. Overlapping towards the topmost portion of the spine are two large sand dollars positioned to suggest breasts. Superimposed in the center of the breasts are two smaller sand dollars filled in with metallic silver glitter. The location of the silver sand dollars resemble areolas, which reinforces the idea of breasts. Slightly above the woman's chest are stamped images of a wilted flower, outlined in a magenta color. The flowers dangle in a line from shoulder to shoulder, mimicking the shape of a necklace. The various stamped image not only make up the feminine form but also act as connotations to womanhood. The flowers and fruits found interspersed throughout the piece are such examples. In classical works, fruits are often paired with women in secular portraits, acting as connotations for feminine and virginal purity. Fruits, however, were often symbols of fertility and productivity, emblems of the harvest. Another connotation that both flowers and fruits are connected to is mortality and the fragility of life.
