After my father died, I realised that my life as someone's child had ended. I wondered how I was as a child, and looking back at myself, was I the child I would have admired? I remembered being described as silent and shy. A child teachers could easily forget as a student. But was I silent because I was shy or because that was my way of surviving my childhood. Trying to escape reality and drifting into my imagination. I wanted to make a series of self-portraits portraying who I really am. I asked my husband which animal resembled me the most. He said a dog because I was loyal and loving. This is me, suffering silently, but flowers grow out of wounds eventually.

I am Anita Salemink, a writer and visual artist, and I was born in a village named Groessen near Arnhem in The Netherlands. Sometimes I combine paint and graphite. I like working with medical skeletons, dead insects, found objects, pressed flowers, and nude models. I make illustrations for commissions under the name of Tabuki.
