ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have always had a vivid imagination and my images evolve from scribbles which then become forms where eventually the final image is revealed to me. I never really know what is to come and the end result often surprises me. I have always loved literature inspired by magical realism and I feel drawn to the essence we capture in our dreams which are beyond our conscious control. The lack of colour and intensity of black and white is something I use in all my work from this period as it seems to depict a dreamlike quality. This particular image was something which evolved from a much larger drawing and where I have digitally enhanced the detail. It felt apt to name it 'Zenith'

My art is a personal and intuitive exploration of the human condition, capturing the raw and unfiltered essence of existence. I am drawn to the struggles and resilience of the human spirit, seeking to give a voice to the voiceless and to evoke empathy and understanding. My work is a testament to the profound drama of life. I delve into the realms of imagination and reality, often blending the whimsical with the profound. My pieces are narratives blending the figurative with the fantastical aiming to reveal the complex layers of human experience and inviting viewers to step into a world where the mundane transforms into the mystical. This journey is both a dialogue with the subconscious, where spontaneity and discovery play crucial roles. I aim to confront aspects of our existence which are both harsh and fragile, using bold contrasts and dramatic tension to evoke a visceral response. My figures and forms are not mere representations but embodiments of the primal forces that shape our lives. Through colour, texture and form, I endeavour to capture all spectrums of emotion from joy to despair. My art is an invitation to slow down and reflect the fundamental questions of being. I create tableaus that evoke a sense of wonder and introspection where time memory and perception intertwine. It has been said my art captures 'ancient realms of being'. As I scribble these huge doodles, where forms emerge, I explore themes in life encapsulating birth, death and rebirth to symbolise transformation and the cycles of existence. I am fascinated by the interplay of light and dark which I use to heighten the emotional impact of the composition. I like to feel my art is a confrontation with the raw truths of our world, revealing a divine presence within the mundane and the extraordinary within the ordinary. I aim to connect with the viewer on a deep emotional level. There is an honesty in my work and much of it is drawn from a raw unfiltered expression of my own life and my 30 year career as a social worker. I aim to confront the complexities of love, loss and identity. My visual style is rooted in figurative realism but with a surreal, dreamlike quality. The figures are depicted with poses that convey complex emotional and psychological states. I embrace vulnerability and imperfection and my aim is to is to create a space for empathy to inspire others to embrace their own stories with a raw authenticity.
