About The Artwork

This staircase of five floors is in a courtyard on the Isle de Saint Louis in Paris. I gained access because an apartment was being renovated, I stayed and drew for a while, took some photographs and returned .to my studio to complete the large drawing in various layers with a water based wash as well. It was expressively drawn , full of gesture.. It may become a painting one day. Staircases are so mysterious and full pf promise. They also reflect my life. I love the way you look up then down and see openings and ways through. It was narrow and dark but there was daylight at the top. There is always light! I love the way the light casts shadows of the metal banister. The paper is 120 x 80 but the ideal size framed would be 95 x 60cms but that I will leave to you.

I paint interiors and people. I am also active in promoting peace. I paint to commission of both portraits and interiors.. Interiors I paint the mystery of spaces, the beauty of architecture and furnishings but primarily the light in inspirational interiors in oil and watercolour and pastel.. Among others I am influenced by SInger Sergeant, Zorn, Vermeer and the dutch school, Hammershoi, Jeremiah Goodman and Vuillard. I work in the traditional way of developing the picture plane so a senses of entering into the space is created. I want the viewer to be able to lose themselves in the interior, lose time , dream and enjoy the sense of anticipation as to what will happen next , who will come in or what has just happened here. There is a narrative that the viewer develops. The viewer is invited into the picture to make the space their own , hopefully feel at home , or uplifted or just a little unsettled. There is an increasing interest in paintings of interiors and I am collected as there are not so many painters who work like this. Probably my past experience as an interior designer has helped. Following in the tradition of the Dutch and Danish interior painters, who made records of interiors my work is more parred down and softer. It is more about the light effects than the fabrics and colours. The last two years I have been developing work on staircases that reflect Piranesi and Escher in a way, fascinated by the continual up and down and changes of direction. The staircases area reflection of the way my world is at the moment. I am inspired primarily by places I visit but I also adapt and alter what I see. I enjoy being able to capture the wide view , the various viewpoints rather than a single viewpoint. PAINTING PEOPLE When a person has an atmosphere of intelligence and wisdom beyond their years , when they are sensitive and thoughtful. I want to paint. I paint to commission too. I like to work pastel into large painted boards or oil on board. I am particularly drawn to the translucence of young people. Their faces tell their stories and their awareness. www.karina-knight.com ARCTIVIST!
