Phase shift Drawing

Phase shift is an examination of our perception of chromatic colours. In this drawing the lines phase in and out of each colour moving from red through crimson, burgundy, purple, navy, and finally to blue. I wanted to examine just a snippet of the colour spectrum so I could enlarge it and explore the colours between them. The process used to create the detail is taken from the spiral drawings of my organic matter series, which is the origin of my contemporary practice. The process dictates the final form of the drawing, whilst I control the colour change. This creates an original form which cannot be repeated; each time the process is executed a different organic form is created. The perspective of the lines relates back to the concept of the perception, and how we understand physical reality. They give depth to a 2D platform, causing us to question what we know, and intrigue at how we perceive such things. Artists such as Bridget Riley and Frank Stella are integral facets of my artistic practice, as well as James Turrell and the light and space movement. Through these artists I found that a formless experience allows the spectator to reflect within themselves, in attempt to induce sublimity, in a Hegelian sense, by freeing the universal knowledge from sense certainties. The frame has heavy duty hanging hooks at both ends and one in the middle, making it easy to hang horizontally. And is finished with a one piece 3mm glass giving a very clear view of the drawing.
