About The Artwork
In this piece I really wanted to emphasize the stark contrast between the smooth piano and the rugged hand with the underlying musical theme. There’s an implicit distinction in these two main elements: the piano keys with straight lines, flat surfaces and subtle reflections versus the detailed, rough contours of the hand with hard shadows under dark lighting. Hopefully, the outcome of this divergence is not just a drawing visually seen in shades of grey, black and white but is also something that is melodically imagined, echoed and felt in the form of a beautiful piano sonata. Charcoal pencils on 100 lb paper, unframed.

Pedro Silva Santos, aspiring artist from Portugal, Lisbon 1979. I've always liked drawing since I was young and at the time I was using just pencil graphite for some simple sketches. I stopped drawing in the university to focus on my studies and been working on another field since then. All these years I've always wanted to go back to drawing so I've started again in early 2018. Now, I've been learning how to use charcoal which I really like. I love working on detailed, realistic pieces favoring human poses and forms as well as close-up objects, especially with striking lighting effects and shadows. I love a blank sheet, the feeling of a pencil on paper, the sound of the first stroke, the final result and everything in between.
