About The Artwork

In 1936 Walter Benjamin wrote in his seminal essay, “The work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction “The adjustment of reality to the masses and of the masses to reality is a process of unlimited scope, as much for thinking as for perception.” In my piece “Barcode” I have taken the ubiquitous barcode as my starting point. Barcodes contain information primarily used in commercial outlets but are also used in Passports to carry personal information. There is a loss of humanity and a commodification of self in the digital age. I want to highlight this loss of our humanity by fragmenting and dehumanising the face. The fragmented parts of the face are open ended empty vessels The repetition used in mass media to manufacture celebrity through a repeated exposure of an image to the viewer is mimicked in “Barcode”. The Porcelain is silkscreen printed with multiple repeated photographic images then glazed.

I am currently living and working in Sicily. My work is primarily made with Porcelain. It is silkscreen printed with fragmented and distorted images taken from mass media. Previously my work has focused upon how we are manipulated and are losing our humanity and becoming dehumanised through an over saturation of mass media and technology. We are currently worldwide undergoing an Opioid Crisis. Also the use of drugs such as Crystal Methamphetamine and legal highs is endemic. Suicides and overdoses are affecting people in every strata of society. In the US every day 130 people die from Opioid overdoses. In 2018, seventy two thousand people died in the US of drug overdoses. My recent work is about how we are out of balance with our world.
