Bath Installation

A literature inspired installation piece, it can be divided into two. There is the wood, placed behind the bath and then there is the bath itself. The wood is representational of the foundations of the piece, the initial influences; Shakespeare’s King Lear and Antony and Cleopatra. What all of Shakespeare’s plays hold in common is the concept of man being flawed; man falling to sin, greed and lust, and fundamentally man reverting into beast. This idea of imperfection and sin is embodied in the cut-outs I have chosen, and the presence of hands, with them being the vehicle or the tool for sin. The bath on the other hand, does contain the initial Shakespearian influences, due to the cut-outs and collage inside, but it is more about literature and books in general. This is because it is layered, there are overlapping cut-outs, covered in PVA, plaster, paint ect, and to discern the meaning or the foundation of the bath you have to look past these layers. This piece can be seen as a deconstructed conceptual artist book, inspired by the likes of Dieter Roth and Tom Phillips.
