Crataegus Installation

Thousands of hawthorn berries collected and dried over three consecutive autumns. The berries have been surrounded by stripped, charred hazel sticks. The circle is a universally recognised symbol; a continuum with no beginning and no ending. In 'Crataegus,' the berries remind us of autumn, and the last vestiges of colour in the landscape before the coming of winter. They remind me of my childhood in the countryside, hours spent foraging in the fields, returning home, baskets overflowing with nature's offerings from the hedgerow, ready to be 'processed and preserved' for the lean winter months ahead. The charred hazel sticks signify the coming of winter, the death of colour, and the onset of short winter days and long winter nights; a time when body and soul is nourished and sustained by autumnal fruits and the memories of spring. The quantities of material gathered, and the preservation and decomposition of this material have become increasingly important in my work, reflecting my preoccupation with time and the fragility and preciousness of life.
