About The Artwork

The woman in the poem is attempting to "shed her skin", her old ways of life. A difficult life of addiction is hinted at. These chairs, domestic objects have been hacked at, chiselled, sections sawn off. These actions are violent. They have attacked the “skin” of the chair, the leather and the varnished wood, revealing a new worn away skin. This wearing away resembles muscles and sinews, broken. The chairs are placed in opposition with each other suggesting a power dynamic, suggesting two people who once sat there, standing up and leaving mid-way through an argument. A sawn off leg, a weapon left on the floor beside them. A pair of dancing shoes, themselves beginning to shed their skin. Domestic grubbiness, contrasted with glamour.
