"A story about the Gdańsk Shipyard." A wall of figures, a parade of shipyard workers and students with Polish flags, the entrance to the Gdańsk Shipyard, and finally the figure of Lech Wałęsa - Polish president. All this in a painting composed of 18 layers of structured paper, painted with ink and watercolor, was immortalized by a Gdańsk artist, Mieczysław Bastrykin. The painting was signed by the chairman of the Solidarity Trade Union himself. The realization of the artistic vision of the portrait attracts the eye not only due to the multitude of symbolic, clearly outlined elements, but also due to the non-standard performance of the work. The 50x70 cm picture consists of 18 individual layers of structured paper, glued together into one openwork structure. The graphics were painted with ink and cut out, and the colored elements were colored with watercolors. The painstaking work on the painting was completed a month ago, and on January 5, Lech Wałęsa signed a commemorative autograph on the painting. The image was created as part of a project that was to be released in late 2020, which, however, did not happen due to the pandemic restrictions. The foreground of the painting, which consists of as many as 6 layers, shows figures intertwined in the wall: a crowd, a march of shipyard workers and students, symbolizing solidarity and rebellion against the authorities. - The march carries banners and Polish flags, many marchers raise two fingers: a symbol of peace and victory, characteristic in most countries of the world, associated with Solidarity and Lech Wałęsa - reports Mieczysław Bastrykin. - Placing fingers in the letter "V", or "victory" in the whole circle of Western culture is considered a symbol of triumph and peace. The other shipbuilders raise their fists. It is a bow to support in order to express unity, strength, rebellion. In the crowd of shipyard workers and workers, the figure of Our Lady of Częstochowa is visible, who acts there as an intermediary between people and God. - The protesters turn to her with love and trust, believing that she will listen to them, understand them, intercede for them and support them - adds the artist. The next layers are the very face of Lech Wałęsa, which emerges from the background - the Gdańsk Shipyard. Its most characteristic symbols are clearly visible: the Three Crosses monument, the historic shipyard entrance gate, cranes, hangars and a ship on the slipway.
