" Musical Endangered Butterfly" commissoned by Discovery Channel. The work is the third in a series of installations by students from Chelsea College of Art & Design, who pitched their ideas to Discovery on the concept of Igniting Curiosity. The winners all have the opportunity to exhibit their work on one of the walls in the Discovery Café in London for three months. Huang’s wall is a stunning display of 1000 butterflies made of painted watercolour paper. Twenty species are represented, all of which are endangered as a result of habitat destruction. They are laid out from the brightest to darkest in order to draw people's attention to the centre of the wall where two rows of bigger butterflies are attached to music boxes. Huang was thrilled at the opportunity to exhibit her work at Discovery and told us what inspired her vision. “I chose these particular species to remind people of their beauty and also to raise awareness of their circumstances. When spectators turn the dials on the central butterflies, delicate sound comes from music boxes they are attached to, accompanied by the spin of butterfly. The whispering of endangered butterflies represents the calling for a conversation about them.”
