About The Artwork

This art object is built on the familiar Operation Game in which players earn money to operate on Cavity Sam. Interestingly, the name Cavity Sam is similar to the name Uncle Sam, the national personification of the American government. I extend the name of the game to Operation Iraqi Freedom, the code name chosen for the March 20, 2003 attack on Iraq. I remove all but the wrench and broken heart from the original game board and add parts from exploding vehicles. I place two exploding vehicles behind Cavity Sam. The IED, Improvised Explosive Device, often hidden in a vehicle or used to disable a vehicle killed soldiers and civilians alike. The object depicts the cost of war on the human body. I created new Doctor and Specialist cards to explain the explicit destruction to the body by IEDs and to provide general information about this war. I recreated Saddam Hussein currency to remind the viewer that war was started to remove him from power. The first version of this object was created in 2007. The image is laminated in plastic for durability. You receive the image affixed to the original red plastic game board. This is a limited edition of 50 with some artist proofs. There may be slight differences as the object is based on found object games. The light and buzzer may work or may not work. This object comes in the original game box. Some box wear may be noticeable. The wear and tear of age on the box, light, and buzzer echo real life circumstances. You can display the object on a table or hang it on a wall.
