About The Artwork

RGB VRTX is a light and drawing installation; the piece adorns the architecture of a space and alters our perception of it with light. On the façade of VRTX there are three perspective drawings in red, green, and blue. The lights installed inside the piece change between the three colours RGB, causing the lines of the drawing to disappear and reappear as the background changes colour. Our perception of VRTX is in constant fluctuation, whilst we know it has a static state, we perceive it as moving. The materials are familiar however we see them as something different, this is to question our sense certainties and universal knowledge. When our senses feed us information, we take this as reality; often common aspects of reality are saved into our universal knowledge e.g. the shape of a chair or the feel of metal. When our senses feed us information, contradicting our universal knowledge, it calls into our question our perception of reality, and new perspectives can be found within this spectrum of understanding. VRTX is remote controlled; its functions can fade and jump between colours, as well as flash. The colours range from red, green, blue, and white, as well as the full spectrum in-between them, equalling twenty shades. It allows the spectator to interact with the piece and explore their own perception of colour and space. The light from VRTX fills the space it is installed, creating sublime atmospheres within the architecture, inducing an engulfing experience of light. The RGB series started with ‘The perceptual cinema’ instillation I created in 2016, and has had only had four iterations. In this controlled space I created a cinema like environment where people were invited to explore their own perception. Inside was full blackout and the lights reflected on the outside large curved drawing, taking up your view like an Imax screen. After this I wanted to create and RGB that could fit into an existing architecture, to offer an intervention from ordinary reality. I decided that the lights should emanate from the piece rather than reflect of off it, thus seeming like it is coming from another place. I wanted to create something that exists fully within your known reality but is perceived as other worldly. The triangle became the perfect shape for this, as it not only fits easily into architecture, but also because the triangle is a primary shape saved into our universal knowledge from an early age. Once fitted into its space VRTX became like a rift in reality, a vortex to another platform of viewing.
