About The Artwork

Tessellat: Afrika is a bold graphic representation of the harmonious future of Afrika. Within the piece I choose accentuate our roots and interconnectedness by creating bands of pattern stretching horizontally across the entirety of the African continent, ignoring man made borders and country partitions. At first glance one notices the simplified silhouette of Africa as a beautiful bold shape. The medium creates a perfectly glassy effect but upon closer inspection one notices cracks, the flaws, gaps in our history and in ourselves. This is all necessary as the journey in itself is part of our healing and beauty. The intricate patterns that span across the continent highlight details relating to our rich diverse heritage, history and culture. Whether the mix of colours relate to the flag of ones origins or a pattern native to ones lineage or jewellery passed down for generations, the essence of the pattern is always African. You can feel it when you look at it, you feel connected to it, but not always certain why. I have also chosen the spelling of Afrika as opposed to Africa because many within the continent believe the K to be a truer reflection of the name of the continent based on the many native languages within Afrika. It also speaks to a more Afro-centric viewpoint i.e. a perspective of Afrika by Afrikans rather than from an external party. The colours used are the traditional bold strong colors, associated with African art and design but I have added tones of pastel to show the nuances of the African people. Of course we are strong, resilient, fierce people... but our softer sides are finally allowed to be openly expressed. No longer is love, mercy and compassion perceived as weaknesses to be hidden but rather more frequent, more forthcoming and infinitely healing. Tesselat: Afrika was created using 8122 blocks adhered to plexiglas backing with french cleat hanging system for easy hanging.

I am a 35 year old artist and designer who lives in Cape Tow, South Africa with the husband, the kid and 2 cats. I am a founding partner of successful designer clothing brand, adam&eve having participated in numerous fashion weeks and international exhibitions for the past 10 years. A year ago, I shifted my focus to Art, Interior design and working with new materials. I am current working exclusively with tiny plastic building blocks. My fascination with creating large-scale works from plastic building blocks comes from my love of minute detail and intricate patterns. I discovered the art of tessellation on a recent trip to Morocco. I loved how every surface was painstakingly adorned to perfection, and the appreciation from both locals and visitors. Tessellation is a highly symmetric, edge-to-edge tiling using a simple porcelain shape. I hope to highlight and recreate the art form of tessellation in a modern way using plastic building blocks. This medium creates an intense nostalgia and relevance for all ages. I absolutely love watching people realize that the artwork is created with building blocks. Followed by the overwhelming need to touch the artwork because its such a tactile medium, and the sheer happiness they feel when I reassure them that they can indeed touch it. It makes me so happy.
