About The Artwork

Taewook Lee has worked on drawings capturing, observing, gleaning, and representing brief ideas in everyday life to figure out his surroundings; both people and things. Such insubstantial ideas are mostly concerned with things we commonly come up with in everyday life. These are thoughts everyone can naturally recollect but in a sense we may be somewhat reluctant to draw out. The Others is both a narrative on unidentified beings, not me, and an exploration of the world of others represented by the 'you' who lives in a world different from my world. According to the artist, different beings make efforts to understand each other with their own systems but cannot achieve this due to their elementally different approaches. And yet, this work is of significance to the artist since I am able to reflect on myself through your appearance living in the world in a different way than me. ‘the Others’ in this work refers to beings that are unknown to me. They are imaginary intellectual living things we either have yet to grasp or cannot have a direct bond or communicate with due to the system they rely on to live. They might be extraterrestrial life forms. They – much like us we explore ancient relics and faraway outer space – seem to do their best to understand our consciousness, mental structures, and systems in their own manner as they examine and experience traces of our lives. The information they have gleaned seems unconcerned with how we anticipate such information to be judged, perceived, or understood and does not depend on any direction of exploration, association, or overall plan. I consider this work to be of great significance since this structure is not much different from the structure between ‘me’ and ‘others’. The other I portray is ‘you’ who lives in a different system and is also “me” to you.

I was born in South Korea in 1979, and presently live and work in Seoul. I make efforts to secure freedom from all fixed things within me, exploring the way to reach the highest happiness through travel or in everyday life. I represent my ideas through painting works, trying to communicate with the general public via exhibitions or web sites.
