“Chalchiuhtlicue with a broken jug” Codex Borgia, plate 20. Digitally enhanced by MM in 2022 on orange background. For my new Ñundeui book I need another illustration of Chalchiuhtlicue, the goddess of running water, the one with the jade-colored skirt, the goddess of lakes, rivers, oceans and springs. I chose this mysterious and intriguing image from the Codex Borgia, plate 20. When highlighting ancient pictograms I would like to reproduce the original shapes and colors, but sometimes the shapes are too complex and have to be simplified. Chalchiuhtlicue means “the one with the jade skirt “, but the Codex Borgia includes no jade color and is painted in red, yellow, brown and grey. Also, I would like to communicate what this mysterious image means. All the restorers of the Codex Borgia Gisele Díaz and Alan Rodgers disclose is that the goddess makes an offering of blood. I am especially intrigued by the huge snake emerging from her broken jug. That is certainly not a good omen, but no explication of this fatal symbol seems available. The jade-colored skirt is almost nowhere to be found. Other outstanding pre-Columbian codices like Laud and Fejérváry Mayer show the goddess in a white skirt, sometimes decorated with jade-colored spheres. In short, most information on the goddess is speculation and few hard data seem available. Based on the symbolism of the ancient Tlacuilo I present Chalchiuhtlicue, one of the main goddesses of the Aztec Pantheon, as I see fit.

As an industrial photographer from Cologne, Germany, based since 1967 in Mexico City, I used my craft for decades to document scenes and subjects in sharp, detailed and well lit images. Back in the seventies, when simulating views of other planets, I was looking for a different perception of reality and found it with infrared color film. Today I enjoy a creative freedom similar to that of a painter. With the right combination of photograph and digital manipulation I can create images that are a tribute to imagination and beauty. Starting in 2019 I present on Saatchiart 15 collections as a synopsis of my photography, some digitally remastered and others digitally modified, for sale as archival inkjet prints in different sizes.
