‘The way to address our vulnerability, fear and self-destructiveness is by making friends with our weakness. We can’t drive away our demons by willpower. We can’t get through the troubles of life by self-reliance alone.’ My work seeks to investigate the human condition. In particular I am interested in recovery from personal trauma and private grief; the impact these experiences have on the individual psyche and its projection into the surrounding space. I seek to make these experiences material; in two, sometimes three dimensions. My means are mostly abstract but my subject is very much the human being. This work was inspired by hearing a radio broadcast by the vicar of St Martins-in-the-Fields in London, in which he urged people not to ‘hold on so tightly to our private struggles and agonies.’ It is a drawing depicting entities with something dark, a ‘black hole’ at their core and is made using materials I have worked with before, charcoal and pigment combined with a masking film which I use both for creating stencils and for building up the physical surface of the drawing. I like the feeling of suspension in the drawing, with the 'dark matter' somehow held immobile, suspended in the web of tentacles.

Denmark
I am a British artist, living in Denmark. I came to art later in life, having worked for over a decade as a journalist and radio producer with the BBC World Service and Arts programmes. Originally I studied Medicine at Oxford University, but I came to realise that this was a decision taken for the sake of others, and I needed to find my own path. Life had knocked me off balance at an early age, with an early separation from my mother, and again as I was coming of age, when my father died prematurely leaving me without immediate family. In retrospect, art was there all along, but I needed to find the confidence to pursue it, and the means. I grew up in the north of England, lived in London for many years and have settled in Copenhagen, Denmark. The key concerns in my practice have stemmed from life: the unpredictability of circumstance, absence and presence, the condition of the outsider or foreigner, the marginal and the discontinuous. Landscape and place; feeling at home in many places and nowhere.
