Canvas, gesso, marble paste, 24k gold leaf, Italian dark ochre, green earth, wax, ash and acrylic on board. “The role of the artist in any generation is to translate the imaginative consciousness of the world into works of art that punctuate civilization with enough beauty and meaning to move humanity forward. To that end, I am a mixed media artist seeking to describe the defiant beauty and spectral opulence of the human spirit through large, abstract wall sculptures made from torn canvas fragments saturated with gesso, layers of acrylic and oil paint, and 24 karat gold mounted on hand built pine frames. Moving outward from the center with one canvas fragment at a time, I build windblown spirals that seek to represent what the disembodied energy of an icon might look like if it stood outside its skin. My work presents with almost Baroque decadence and theatricality. I gild either the contours of the sculpted canvas or around with 24 karat gold to symbolize divinity. In fact, I consider my artistic practice a kind of abstract iconography. Traditional iconographers, or “image writers” in Greek, created pictures that were meant to draw the viewer into what is sacred. My work aims to do the same but to take the message one step further: to invent a kind of iconography that speaks to a postmodern audience by acting as a mirror for the sacred, true self. An iconography that invites us to see greatness not in the faces and stories of others but in ourselves. An iconography that initiates the romance of potential.”

The work of any artist is ultimately this— to give observation and imagination a body. It is to look at the world closely and slowly and, through the service of a particular medium, to create a kind of portal that spans the gap between matter and spirit, crosses every demographic divide, and dares both individuals and societies into transformation. My artistic practice is a unitive exercise in which historic preservation meets modern art. I am a mixed media artist interested in themes of transcendence and rebirth, and the pieces I create are visual enactments of the beauty of evolution in which the past is both honored and included but also transcended. Often appearing in my work are Italian giltwood fragments sourced primarily in Florence and the region of Tuscany. These 17th and 18th century artifacts, which are finite in number and difficult to source, have been separated from their original places of belonging (usually churches). With sculpted canvas, gesso, plaster, and paint I create new settings for these artifacts which are worthy of them. I teach them to begin again. Sometimes I even adorn their scars with minerals and gems, transforming these relics of the past into works of luxe modern art which have a voice and a message: Renaissance for All.
