Based on an African butterfly Euphaedra eleus or Orange Forester. The genus Euphaedra comprises of a number of large and very beautiful forest-dwelling butterflies, all found on the African continent. The butterfly is distributed from Sierra Leone to Congo and Western Uganda. Unlike many insects who use camouflage, this species uses mimicry to survive predators. Mimicking day flying moths with similar colouring and are noxious so a bird that has tasted one is deterred from attacking any similarly coloured species. Yet again, nature's ingenuity leaves me feeling humbled and in awe. The orange foresters are complimentary set against an urban, vibrant, found texture, that I digitally manipulated to transform into a beautiful backdrop for these magnificent butterflies. The artwork is printed, using pigment inks on German etching hahnemühle with hand glazed and three dimensional paper cut butterflies. This is one of a kind framed in a bespoke, hand painted, 60cm in a circular frame.

With a background in scientific illustration, Evi Antonio’s art forensically investigates the detail of the natural world. Originally inspired by the lithographic plates in the 19th century, Evi developed her own technique that reflects the authenticity of the traditions and documentation of scientific and natural history art. London based artist Evi Antonio, grew up in the urban landscape but knew early on she she was fascinated in the natural world. She went on to study and graduate with a degree in scientific illustration, working on natural history publications. Her work transitioned into fine art in 2012 when her painting was accepted into the Royal academy summer exhibition in 2012 and projecting her into the fine art world. Evi’s vision is to turn the ordinary into the extra ordinary. Walking around London, she sees and finds beauty in the textures and within the gritty urban environment. She questions what is beauty? Transcending notions of beauty and ugliness in both urban landscape and the natural world by Illuminating aspects of her subjects that may go unnoticed. “Been up close is physical and visceral and as an artist I want to capture that and give back to the viewer.“ Humanity and nature are at a crisis point. The metaphor in the art is that it’s vital now to realise we are all connected and we need to look close not only at the world around us but at ourselves to make positive changes for the future. Evi has exhibited her work both as a solo artist and in group shows all over the UK and Affordable Art Fairs. Awards include, best artist, East of England with the NOAC competition, The Secret Art Prize runner up winner in 2018. Most recently, Winner of The Cult House Open Call 2019. Evi lives and works between her home in Essex and London.
