About The Artwork
The work was done within the framework of the project on memory and VHS cassettes. In Russia, the difficult period of perestroika in the 90s coincided with the distribution of VHS cassettes for recording family archives. This medium turned out to be short-lived - now the records are demagnetized and turn into garbage. I want to capture the memory that eludes us by digitizing and restoring video recordings. And using the same method of digital manipulation, I try to transfer the effect of spoiled film to modern images to level the past and the present. The prints are museum-quality, archival pigment prints on high-end fiber-based papers and are printed in limited editions. They are shipped with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. Sasha Bauer is a interdisciplinary artist from Saint-Petersburg who was born in Surgut, Russia in 1988. She has a degree in psychology and uses photography and other visual techniques as an art-therapy for self-reflection and expression of subconscious images. The author explores the themes of individual and collective subconscious traumas as well as of national, gender and cultural identities. In her work, the author is inspired by the work of such individuals as Sofie Calle, Ilya Kabakov, Laura Letinsky, Ingmar Bergman and many other. In her projects, Sasha uses various visual techniques: collage, installation, photography, scanography, intuitive drawing, object modeling.
