The term 'Nocturne' is used to connote night or evening. It might also be used to describe an instrumental composition of a dreamy or pensive nature. Armed with an appreciation of Chopin's Nocturnes, an empathetic connection to animals and a love of the Dutch Masters’ unrivalled treatment of light and shadow, I have set about to explore the amorphous space that exists in the twilight separating reality from fiction, consciousness from the subconscious and animal from human. This body of work strives to juxtapose the unselfconscious beauty, grace and ferocity of beast with the exploitative and all too often cruel indifference of their bipedal brethren. I offer these images up as a guilty nod to my own complicity in this objectification and as a visual ode to the suffering, the majesty and the disparate intelligence of all the creatures that we humans share this world with. 'We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were able to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form." - William Ralph Inge

*(May I preface this by saying that any 'banding' or high levels of pixelation seen on some of the preview images of my work, does not appear on the final print. This is purely a monitor display issue. Black, in particular, tends to fragment and break up on certain monitors quite considerably - thank you). In the mid-nineties I received a BA Fine Arts (Hons) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa) where I majored in printmaking passing with distinction. The subsequent two decades have been spent earning my bread and butter in the field of graphic design, working with agencies both here in South Africa, and abroad, honing my digital skills and transposing my fine arts sensibility to various software packages. The origins of this body of work can be found in the meshing of those traditional and electronic disciplines. These images are digital paintings (literally, in this instance, rendered with custom designed Photoshop brushes). They are ultimately printed on archival paper stocks using the 'giclee' printing process.
